Research
Research
This is evidence that I have researched the different codes and conventions of a thriller film. I have done this by looking at different websites on the internet where this information is available. This is useful to me because it has helped me to better understand the genre that I want to base my film opening on. If I know the typical conventions of a thriller, then I can implement them on screen or if I want I can subvert them to create an element of difference (Steve Neale's repetition and difference theory) in order to make my film opening more unique. If my film uses thriller codes and conventions then it will be easily recongisible as a thriller film. In addition, if it also subverts to them then the uniqueness will also be appealing to the audience.
Conventions of Thriller Films
- Fast paced editing
- Low key lighting
- Quick jump cuts
- Close ups to show emotion
- Tension
- Tense music
- A restoration of an equilibrium (Todorov's narrative arc)
- The use of mise-en-scene to portray the protagonist and antagonist - Often, the protagonist will wear bright or ordinary clothes whilst the antagonist will wear darker clothes
- A disturbing plot driven by the villain that creates obstacles for the hero (Propp's character functions theory)
- Violence
- Death
Audience Expectations of A Thriller
- Expect to be engaged within the narrative
- Expect to feel a rush of emotions
- Expect to feel tension
- Expect to feel anxiety
- Expect to be entertained (Uses and gratifications theory by Bulmer and Katz)
